Comic Caper by Karl Koweski
Women were a mystery to Donahoe.
He was more familiar with the workings of Gotham. Maybe that was his problem. Not his predilection for Hawaiian shirts. Comic books, nature’s woman repellant.
Felicia was different. She seemed enthusiastic about his comic collection, would ask him questions, not about characters or storylines, mostly about value.
It was enough. He was in love.
When she knocked him over the head with a Batman Hot Toy, he never saw it coming.
If she’d been more curious, she’d have learned CGC graded books are logged in a computer base, easily accessible by police.

Nervously he sat at the kitchen table, awaiting her arrival.
He’d picked out a fine rose for the occasion. Its color was bold; its thorns were sharp.
She loves me, he said, letting go of another petal. She loves me not.
Soon he’d know the truth.
The front door swung open and closed, bringing with it a blast of frigid winter air. God, how he longed for her warmth.
She loves me.
Her footsteps, fast. Always in a hurry.
She loves me n—
She entered the room. He’d picked out a fine knife for the occasion. Its blade was sharp.
